F. LEATHERS Dies At 81

Forrest W. LEATHERS, 81, lifetime resident of Jefferson County, died at 10:52 a.m. Wednesday at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

He had undergone complete hip surgery and was apparently recuperating satisfactorily until he was stricken.

Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Bartruff officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Members of the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Forrest W. LEATHERS was born Oct. 4, 1896, in Jefferson County, the son of Samuel S. and Ida WALMER LEATHERS. His marriage to June GIRE took place March 8, 1922, in Fairfield.

LEATHERS spent his entire life in Jefferson County, farming all his life until his retirement, yet taking time to serve his neighbors and community. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Keep Young Club.

He served as an officer of the Farmers Home Administration, he was a member of the Blackhawk Township Precinct Board for 52 years, an active member of the Democratic Party and served as a director of the Blackhawk Township School No. 6 for a number of years.

Mr. and Mrs. LEATHERS moved to Fairfield when they retired five years ago and the family home is at 808 Liberty Drive.

In addition to his widow he is survived by a daughter, Jenna FOSTER, Fairfield; one son, Max LEATHERS, stationed at Norton Air Force Base, San Bernadino, Calif; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Capt. Robert L. LEATHERS, Marine Corps pilot, who was killed in a crash near Okinawa Nov. 18, 1960.

Admin. note: Forrest was first married to Hazel Eleanor ROBISON, on January 3, 1918; she died February 11, 1919 and is buried in lot 2nd.201 in Evergreen Cemetery. Forrest and second wife Lapha June are buried in Lot 3rd.091, she surviving him by about four years.
