Dora Lillus VORHIES

Dora Lillus VORHIES, 89, of Fairfield, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012 at the Jefferson County Health Center.

A memorial service is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Frosty Van Voorst officiating. Burial of the remains will be at a later date. Visitation for family and friends will be from 9:15-10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous or the VFW Cancer Fund. Cards and memorials can be sent to Leslie Gentry at 205 E. Buchanan Ave. Apt. C3, Fairfield 52556.

Mrs. VORHIES was born Dec. 7, 1922 southeast of Packwood, the daughter of Raleigh C. and Lila WOOLUMS ADAMS. She married George VORHIES Jan. 10, 1945 in Fairfield.

Mrs. VORHIES lived in the Fairfield area since 1937.

She was a life member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary, where she served three terms as local president, two terms as district president and state president, two years on the National Council of Administration and one term as National Big Ten Safety Chairwoman.

She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, in which she served as worthy matron and Rainbow girls mother advisor. She also was a Girl Scouts leader, taking her troops from Brownies to senior scouts.

She served on the Fairfield Girl Scouts Council, and was a Boy Scouts den mother.

She served a two-year term as PTA President of the former Roosevelt School, where she was instrumental in the Highway 34 underpass project.

She was a member of First Christian Church for more than 50 years.

She enjoyed reading, crafting, needlework and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; two children, Leslie GENTRY and Lane VORHIES and spouse Julie, both of Fairfield; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.
