The Fairfield Ledger, March 1, 1899, page 3, col 4. DEATH OF A PIONEER WOMAN. Mrs. Nancy C. Stanford died in this city Saturday evening aged 74 years. She was the wife of Abraham Stanford, to whom she was married February 9, 1841 and with whom she had lived happily for almost 60 years. She was the daughter of Joel Bradshaw who came to Jefferson county with the first movement of emigration in the spring of 1839 and located on a farm four miles southeast of this city. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Stanford, four sons and four daughters, the eldest of whom, Francis Isaac, died in the war of the rebellion. Six others are now living--Joel Jasper in Appanoose County, Mrs. Ella Key Moore in Colfax County, NE, John Feigh, Abraham Lincoln, Mrs. A.S. Doughty, Mrs. C.H. Doughty and Mrs. D.T. Boley in this county. Nearly all of Mrs. Stanford's life had been spent in Jefferson County. She was a Christian woman of many excellences and there are many friends to mourn her death. Funeral services were held in this city Monday by Rev. Lewis Mendenhall of the Free Methodist church and her remains were interred in the Evergreen Cemetery.
