Edna Francis ROBERTS

Edna Francis ROBERTS, 76, of Brighton died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, with the Rev. Ron McMenamin officiating. Interment will be in Howard Grove Cemetery in Pleasant Plain.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. ROBERTS was born Aug. 22, 1923, in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of Pearl and Minnie Katherine GIBERSON LEE. She married Harry L. ROBERTS Aug. 6, 1928 (sic - 1938?), in Mount Pleasant. He died in 1997.

She attended school in Mount Pleasant and Salem and had lived in both of those communities as well as Crawfordsville and Washington. She worked with her husband in "The Office" in Pleasant Plain. She was a resident of Brighton since 1966.

She attended the St. Joseph Church in East Pleasant Plain. She was the president and a member of Pleasant Plain Pioneers, who received the Community Betterment Award and were invited to have dinner with Gov. Terry Brandstad. She also started the Santa Claus Run in Pleasant Plain.

Survivors include 12 children Bob RITZ of Mount Pleasant, M. Jo HOWELL, Arlene HAUSER and Bert TURNER, all of Washington, Sylvia Kaye BLANCHARD of Oskaloosa, Danny GILL, Ron ROBERTS and Gary ROBERTS, all of Brighton, John ROBERTS of Jones, Okla., Terry ROBERTS of Kendalville, Ind., and Vickie WALLACE of Leesville, La.; 31 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and one sister, Erma MANNING of Washington.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; one son, Ralph ROBERTS; two daughters, Charlene and an infant; and three brothers, Harold DOVENSPIKE, Roy LEE and Art LEE.

Admin. note: Edna and husband Harry are in Henry County, IA, in the 1940 census, where Edna is described as 16 years old and married. With them is a recently-born daughter, Melva. It would appear that the paper had the year of marriage incorrect.
