Harold L. "Pete" PEARCE, 85, of Fairfield, died at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Following his wishes, his body was cremated. A celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date.
Memorials have been established to the Fairfield Elks 1192 Charitable Trust for scholarships or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Mr. PEARCE was born Oct. 23, 1916, in Lewis, the son of Boyd and Rhoda PETERSON PEARCE.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater and fought at Normandy. He received two purple hearts.
He married Violet E. TAYLOR. They lived in Cedar Rapids until moving to Fairfield in 1952. They owned and operated the Why-Not Tavern. He managed the Walton Club for 15 years. He and his wife, Vi, were in charge of food service at the Elks Club for six years.
He served on the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors for 13 1/2 years, beginning in 1972 when he was appointed to fill a vacancy. He was elected to the seat three times.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans, Walton Club, Elks Lodge, and the Eagles Club.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Pat PEARCE AAMODT and her husband Larry of Downey, Calif.; three granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.
