Vivian B. HAMMES, 81, died Monday morning at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, after a brief illness. Ms HAMMES was a noted community leader in Fairfield and Jefferson County. Some of her many accomplishments include establising a new Fairfield Senior Center, starting the Holiday Santa KandyKane House tradition in Central Park, successfully campaigning to build the Fairfield Junior High School, and leading the Fairfield Indoor Pool project with the Fairfield Parks & Recreation Board. She founded several area service organizations, including the Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary, and St. Mary's "Helping Hands", formerly known as the Altar & Rosary Society. Vivian served as President for many organizations, including the Fairfield Business and Professional Women, Fairfield Schools P.T.A., the 1997 Jefferson County RAGBRAI event, St. Mary's Parish Council, and in addition was co-editor of the St. Mary's "FIAT" periodical. She was active as a volunteer for Bargain Box, and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Lion's Club, Eagles Club, and the National Association of Realtors. She retired in 1995 as Manager of the Fairfield Senior Center after 23 years of service.
Vivian Beatrice BOYLE was born September 29, 1930, in Moline, IL, the daughter of Leo BOYLE and Zoe PULFORD BOYLE. Vivian graduated from East Moline High School in 1948 in East Moline, IL, and lived in the Fairfield area since 1958. She married Edwin C. HAMMES on February 2, 1974. She is preceded in death by her parents & her husband; brother Leo BOYLE, Jr.; sons Gregory D. MOGGED, Patrick HAMMES, & James HAMMES; and grandson Benjamin SWANSON. She is survived by 3 sons: Douglas HAMMES (Debbie), Cedar Rapids IA; Charles MOGGED, Jr. (Jan), Colleyville, TX., and Jim MOGGED (Penny) Lindenhurst, IL and by 2 daughters: Kathleen KELLER (Alan) Algona, IA, and Karen SWANSON (David) Fairfield IA. She is also survived by her brother Paul BOYLE (Marilyn) Moline IL; sister-in-law Beverly BOYLE, Moline IL; her uncle Col.(ret.) Richard BOYLE, Coran, NY; and by 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Vivian was known as a spirited, generous person who had a very direct way. She was community minded and a great leader, winning numerous awards for outstanding achievements and Person of the Year. Yet she was also very devoted to her family and friends, a ferocious advocate that everyone was happy to have in their corner. Vivian had the ability and gift to make people feel special by listening to what they were talking about. Whether you were a grandchild, nephew, niece or friend you knew she cared. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She left the world a better place for being here.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Fairfield on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012. Father Robert Striegel will officiate, and interment after the services will be held in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church from 5 - 7:30 p.m., with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5, 2012.
Memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary, St. Mary's Catholic Church, or the American Heart Association.
