He was a Pioneer.

Robert Tilford GILMER died in this city Saturday morning, after many years of declining health. With one exception he was probably the oldest living resident of Jefferson county. He was not a member of the party of settlers which first located in Round Prairie Township May 16, 1836, but was a nephew of James TILFORD, its leader, and had made his home here continuously since April, 1837.

Mr. GILMER was born in Adair county, Ken., January 21st, 1817. When nineteen years of age, in 1836, he accompanied his parents, James and Elizabeth TILFORD GILMER from his native state to McDonough county, Ill., and the following spring came with them to this county. December 11th, 1855, he was married to Miss Anna C. SCOTT, who survives him, near Berlin, Sangamon county, Ill. They were the parents of three children, only one of whom is now living, Frank GILMER of this city. While Mr. GILMER has made his home in Fairfield for several years, the greater part of his life was spent on his farm in Round Prairie township. He was until a few years ago the largest land-holder in Jefferson county, at one time owning 1,320 acres of farm lands. Mr. GILMER was a member of the republican party from the time of its organization, but never held public office, with the exception of a term of two years as member of the board of supervisors. He was a man with many excellent traits. Honesty, industry and good fellowship characterized his entire life. The doors of his home were always open to those who chose to enter and its hospitality was of the most generous kind. His roof has given shelter to many a homeless person and was their home as it was his. Mr. GILMER had much to do with Jefferson county in its earlier days; his counsels were always wise and timely. His old friends will learn of his death with genuine regret. The remains were interred in this city Monday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the fmaily residence on East Burlington street, conducted by Rev. A. J. Garrison of the Christian church.

Mrs. GILMER and members of her family desire to publicly express their thanks to the friends and neighbors who rendered such kindly assistance in the hours of sickness and death.
