Richard William ELAND, 72, of 100 N. 16th St., No. 57, died Friday morning, June 6, 2003, at his home.
The body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Wallarab officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Following the memorial service, relatives and friends can join the ELAND family at the Fairfield Elks Lodge to celebrate Mr. ELAND's life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Richard W. Eland Memorial Scholarship. Cards and memorials can be sent to Leslie FREEMAN, 2964 Glasgow Road, Fairfield 52556.
Mr. ELAND was born March 23, 1931, in Burlington, the son of Lloy L. and Beatrice MORRIS ELAND. He married Shirley E. KASKA Nov. 28, 1953, in Vallejo, Calif. She died Jan. 31, 2000.
Mr. Eland graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and Iowa Wesleyan College. He was a United States Navy veteran, who served in the Korean conflict.
He lived in Fairfield since 1960. He was a teacher and coached boys' basketball at Fairfield High School and Parsons College. His career also included years in sales with Universal Producing Company and Fairfield Line before retiring.
He was a member of Elks Lodge 1192, VFW Post 2271, Eagles Club 1927, Walton Club and Fairfield Golf and Country Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Lezlie FREEMAN and husband Joe of Fairfield, Kim FILZ and husband Brent of Kahoka, Mo., and Laura KASKA and husband Jim of Fairfield; one son, Scott ELAND and wife Carol of Keosauqua; one sister, Jane CAYLOR of Fairfield; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
