William Norman 'Bud' LECHNER

William Norman "Bud" LECHNER, 83, of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday, July 19, 2012, at the Maplewood Manor in Keota, after failing health for some time.

Visitation begins at noon Aug. 10 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa; family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m..

Private family burial will take place at a later date.

Memorials have been established to Paws and More Animal Shelter in Washington.

Mr. LECHNER was born Sept. 24, 1928, in Kirksville, Mo., the son of John Henry and Beulah COURTNEY LECHNER. He married Patricia Jean FLYNN Nov. 9, 1947, in Washington. She died in 2005.

He was raised in Brighton and graduated from Brighton High School in 1945. He attended the University of Iowa for one year.

He had been a resident of Washington, Iowa, his entire adult life. He worked for several employers before purchasing the Gambles Store in Washington. The store would later become Lechner's Ace Hardware and Gifts which he operated for a number of years until his retirement.

He loved fishing and at 80 years old, he was still pulling the boat to Riverside, Columbus Junction or Wapello to spend the day on the river.

He had a special way with animals, most notably Pete the Crow and Maggie the Cat.

He enjoyed auctions and antiquing, and he and his wife Pat had operated antique booths in Washington and Branson, Mo.

The couple also enjoyed wintering in Livingston, Texas, which allowed him to fish year round.

Survivors include one son, John LECHNER and spouse Debbie of Kirksville; four daughters, Mary Christine AJZENMAN and spouse Paul of Dallas, Texas, Mary Patricia WATSON and spouse Terry of Sandy, Utah, Clare Ann ISAACSON and spouse Treg of Seattle, Sara Joan WITT and spouse Jack of Covington, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
