George Philip LANG, born in Oppenheim, Germany 18 July 1837; died Feb. 13, 1920 St. Joseph’s Hospital, Ottumwa of pneumonia. Burial Evergreen Cemetery. He was the last of a family of 14 children. On 11 Apr. 1854 he, with an older sister, emigrated to America, landing in New York 30 May 1854. There he learned the bakery trade from his uncle... Married Feb. 25, 1862 Magdalena HERMAN who died 7 Feb. 1884; married 2nd in 1885 Miss Emily HERMAN, sister of the former wife. Survived by wife and children.... In 1861 he baked for the 4th Iowa Cavalry at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, came to Fairfield in 1863 and started a bakery on the south side of the square. In 1897 moved to Ottumwa where he started a bakery, retiring from the business in 1906....

Admin. note: Magdalena is buried in Old Fairfield City Cemetery, with no gravestone. George and Emily (who died in 1931) are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, in Lot Old.P.094.
