Gerald L. KITCHEN

BATAVIA -- Gerald L. KITCHEN, 73, of rural Batvia, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 1996, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Campbell-Kremer Funeral Home in Batavia, with Terry Stark officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery. Open visitation begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the family present from 7 to 8 that night. A memorial has been established to Batavia Little League, in care of Marla Crew, First National Bank, Fairfield.

KITCHEN was born Aug. 16, 1922, in Batavia, the son of Samuel and Vernie MARING KITCHEN. He was raised and educated and lived his entire life in the Batavia area. On June 14, 1947, he married Phyllis MAJOR in Fairfield. He was employed at Iowa Malleable Company in Fairfield for 50 years, retiring in 1991. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of W.C. Harness American Legion Post 0667 in Batavia, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2271 and Fraternal Order of Eagles, both in Fairfield, the Batavia Volunteer Fire Department Poppin' Johnnies of Southeast Iowa, and was manager and treasurer of Batavia Little League for more than 30 years.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mary Ellen STARK of Johnston; three sons, William D. of Kansas City, Mo., Jerry Lee of Des Moines, Douglas Jay of Norwalk; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Paul and Sam Jr., both of Fairfield, Carroll of Blandenville, Ill.; three sisters, Geraldine PEEBLER of Fairfield, Kathryn DUNCAN of Salem, Barbara MELTON of Columbia, Mo. His parents, two brothers, three sisters and a son, Phillip, preceded him in death.
