Marie L. SHAFER dies at 90

Marie L. SHAFER, 90, Jefferson County farmwife, died Sunday at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant where she had resided for the past four years.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Fairfield with Pastor Keith Lingwall officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Raymond Funeal Home. Memorials may be given to the Pleasant Manor Care Center, Mr. Pleasant, or St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Sperry.

Mrs. SHAFER was born Jan. 3, 1894 at Sperry in Des Moines County, the daughter of Gustav and Emma BURGUS. She was a telephone operator in Mediapolis prior to her marriage to Samuel SHAFER Dec. 24, 1919.

Mr. and Mrs. SHAFER spent their married life on their farm near Fairfield until they moved to Pleasant Manor. Mr. SHAFER preceded his wife in death Oct. 18, 1981.

Mrs. SHAFER is survived by two sons, Jacob B., Mt. Pleasant; and Wesley J., Fairfield. Also surviving are five grandchildren, nine great-granchildren, a sister, Alma NICHAUS of Sperry; and two brothers, Art BURGUS and Joe BURGUS, both of Mediapolis.
