Velma Irene DERBY

Velma Irene DERBY, 89, long time Brighton resident died Monday June 18, 2012, at McCreedy Home in Washington, Iowa. She was born September 29, 1922, in Germanville to Sherman Peter and Blanche Pearl (ESCHELMAN) NORTON. She graduated from Brighton High School in 1940 and married Harold S. DERBY in Kahoka, MO on June 1, 1940. Velma worked at Fairfield Glove Company, Advance Ross Electronics in Washington and at Town & Country Tavern in Brighton for ten years as a cook and waitress. She enjoyed finding mushrooms, fishing, gardening, canning, reading and family gatherings on weekends and holidays.

Surviving are her daughter, Janet BUCK of Ainsworth, son William DERBY and wife Margie of Brighton, daughter-in-law Debra DERBY of Swedesburg, two grandsons: Jim BUCK of Ainsworth and David DERBY and his wife Teresa of Mount Pleasant, two granddaughters: Mary BERNS and her husband Don of Ainsworth and Davina SEIBERT of Burlington and one step granddaughter Melinda POLLMEIER and her husband Albert of Muscatine, two great-grandchildren: Edward and Amy BERNS, four sisters-in-law: Viola NORTON of Waterloo, Shirley NORTON of Pella, Eloise NORTON of Fairfield and Ardith DERBY of Davenport. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold in 2004 and son Ronald in 2005 and seven brothers: Arthur, Dale, Verle, Russell, Harold, Raymond and Floyd NORTON, two sisters: Vera Viola NORTON and Dorothy POHREN.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday June 22, 2012, at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton with Rev. Rick Zickefoose officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton. Visitation at Gould Funeral Home will open at 5:30 P.M. Thursday evening, the family will be present 6:30-7:30 P.M. Memorials to Brighton Volunteer First Responders, Brighton Fire Department or Hospice of Washington County may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 3, Brighton, IA 52540.
