ILLNESS FATAL TO MRS. SROUT

Mrs. Joe SROUT, Jefferson county farm woman, died early this morning at the Jefferson county hospital. She had been seriously ill for five weeks and underwent major surgery earlier this month.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral home in charge of the Rev. Frank Deaver. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery.

Mrs. SROUT, who lived a half mile northwest of Fairfield, had been a rsident (sic.) of this area for 20 years. She was born April 14, 1880 at Wapella, Illinois, the daughter of Edward and Elzia (sic. a/k/a Eliza) HUMES NORVELL. She was married to Joe SROUT January 15, 1902, at Clinton, Ill.

She was a member of the Methodist church in Wapella and was affiliated with the V.F.W. auxiliary in Fairfield.

Survivors include her husband, one daughter, Frances, at home, one son, Joe SROUT, Jr., and one grandchild. Two sons, Roger and Jack, who was killed in Germany in World War II, preceded her in death.

She was the last member of a family of nine children.

* Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Buried in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Fairfield, Iowa. Lot: Memorial 42 Space 4.

Her parents, according to her obituary, were Edward Norvell and Elsia HUMES NORVELL. The headstone for them (which includes names and dates of several children of them) uses "Eliza" for the mother's name (they are buried in Long Point cemetery, Wapella, De Witt county, Illinois). It is entirely possible that the Fairfield Daily Ledger obituary (shown on this memorial) used "Elsia" instead of "Eliza". Spelling errors in obituaries (and headstones, for that matter) do occur, so family researchers should be aware of the name variation.

Her name on her headstone inscription was inadvertently spelled "Mable"; her first names were actually Jessie Mabel, with "Mabel" the more common use of her name.
