November 05, 2003Dorothy Elmore McCracken, 68, of Brighton, died at 4:35 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at her home following a year-long fight with cancer.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fern Cliff Evangelical Free Church near Wayland with the Rev. Charles Visser, the Rev. Don Johanson and the Rev. Dean Elmore officiating. Burial will be in Fern Cliff Cemetery.
Open visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Friday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton, with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m.
Memorials have been established to Hospice of Washington County or Fern Cliff Evangelical Free Church.
Mrs. McCracken was born Dec. 18, 1934, the daughter of Lloyd and Dessie Parcel Elmore. She married Roy McCracken Oct. 31, 1953, in Muscatine.
Mrs. McCracken grew up in Richland and attended Richland schools. She was a linotype operator for the Richland Clarion and operated an upholstery shop in her home as well as taught upholstery classes at Kirkwood Community College, taught piano lessons and worked at the YMCA Day Care Center in Washington, Iowa, for several years until retiring for health reasons.
She was a long-time member of Fern Cliff Evangelical Free Church, serving as pianist, organist, Sunday school teacher and choir director. She and members of her family sang together as "The Believers."
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Paul McCracken and wife Wendee of Washington, Iowa, Anthony McCracken and wife Kerry of Davenport, and Austin Perry McCracken and wife Patty of Davenport; two daughters, Anieta Carlson and husband Greg of Filmore, N.Y. and Andrea Johnson and husband Denny of Urbandale; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dean Elmore of Brighton and Willy Elmore of Billings, Mont.; and one sister, Joyce Pavlik of Peoria, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandchild; one infant sister; and two brothers, one in infancy and Clifford Elmore.
