Nellie A. DAVISSON, age 98, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Wesley Acres Health Center, in Des Moines.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield. Burial will follow at Fell Cemetery, near Libertyville.
Visitation with the family will be held starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Fairfield United Methodist Church, Libertyville Faith United Methodist Church or Wesley Life. Cards and memorials may be sent to Janice Bannister: 5016 Harwood Drive, Des Moines, Iowa 50312.
Nellie August APEARSON was born May 12, 1913 to Charles E. and Pearl (McCLAIN) PEARSON, on the family farm Southwest of Libertyville. She married Walter W. DAVISSON at the family home on June 6, 1939. Together they raised their 5 children on a farm in the Mt. Zion community. Their children are: Elaine (Kenneth) CARR of Greenville, South Carolina, Helen (Gordon) NICKS of Annandale, Virginia, Larry (Aleyna) DAVISSON of DeSota, Janice (Robert) BANNISTER of Des Moines and William (Sue) DAVISSON of Bloomington, Illinois, Walter passed away May 27, 1982. (sic)
She attended Kindergarten through 8th grade in a one room country school (Des Moines No.5), graduated from Libertyville High School in 1931 and attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant. She taught school in rural Jefferson County and also taught several rural-homebound students.
Nellie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield, where she enjoyed singing in the choir for many years and was active in many church activities. She was also a member of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau Chorus and the Fairfield Women's Club Chorus. Nellie was selected as Jefferson County's Mother of the Year in 1964. After moving to Fairfield, she was employed at the Fairfield Public Library, which was the first Carnegie Library built west of the Mississippi River.
In 1999, Nellie moved to Wesley Life's, The Village, in Indianola. She moved to Wesley Acres Health Center in Des Moines to be near family, in 2010.
Nellis is survived by 13 grandchildren: Jeffrey (Sonia) CARR, Sylvia (Ed) CHRISTY, Brian NICKS, David NICKS (Lindsey JOYNER), Erik (Donna) DAVISSON, Staci (David) KRAEMER, Roger (Jackie) BANNISTER, John BANNISTER, Thomas (Laura) BANNISTER, Anne (Tim) HURLEY, Amy (Jim) DABLER, Jennifer (Jason) BICKNELL and Michael (Kelly) DAVISSON, 26 great-grandchildren: Wesley (Kami), Staci, Lauren and Rachel CARR, Joshua (Rachel) and Lydia STEWART, Grant and Jana CHRISTY, Sam NICKS, Luke, Derek, Alyssa and Leah DAVISSON, Madison, Lauren and Makenzie KRAEMER, Elizabeth and Gretchen BANNISTER, Sydney and Reese BANNISTER, Joseph, Joshua and Abigail DABLER, Maria and Matthew BICKNELL and Patrick DAVISSON, 2 great-great-grandchildren: Charlton CARR and Nathan STEWART. Nellie was looking forward to the birth of another great-grandchild this fall. She is also survived by 1 sister: Gladys BACHMANN of West Des Moines and 1 grandson-in-law: Ken STEWART.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Walter, 3 brothers: Glenn, Rodney and Leslie PEARSON, 4 sisters: Grace FRAIZER, Beulah HERRIOTT, Florence HORN and Katharyn PARKS and 1 grand-daughter, Cherry STEWART.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff of The Village, Wesley Acres Health Center and Wesley Life Hospice, for their care and concern for Nellie and her family.
