J.O. 'Joe' JOHNSON, 83, 600 W. Kirkwood Ave., died at 9:21 a.m. Monday, April 29, 1996, at Jefferson County Hospital.
Cremation has been completed. A memorial service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Raymond Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Gates officiating. Burial of cremains will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and First Christian Church Elevator Fund.
JOHNSON was born March 20, 1913, in Galesburg, Ill., the son of O.D. and Ella May HAMILTON JOHNSON. He grew up near Birmingham and lived most of his life in Fairfield. He was a self-employed carpenter. On Feb. 22, 1946, he married Ruth McCORMICK at her parents' home in Fairfield. He served in the U.S. Army in the Ordnance 89th Heavy Maintenance-Field Artillery in the European theatre during World War II.
He was a member of First Christian Church, a 50-year member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of which he was past commander and past 1st District commander; and a life member of Fairfield Elks Lodge 1192, of which he service committee chairman for 12 years, and was named Elk of the Year for 1978-79.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Rita PUDER of Fairfield, Mollie PARHAM of Pierceville, Kan.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Kay WIGGINS; and two sisters, Glessie PARSONS and Lolla TRACY.
