Harvey Roy Copeland, 76, of Douds died at 3 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua of complications from congestive heart failure.

The body will be cremated following visitation. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in Mount Moriah Cemetery, north of Douds.

Open visitation will begin at noon Wednesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the family present from 3-4:30 p.m. and 7-8:30 p.m.

Memorials to the family may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 14044 Walnut St., Douds 52551.

Mr. Copeland was born March 4, 1927, in Ottumwa, the son of John Earl and Ella Dimmitt Copeland. He marred Charlotte Ahsmus of Berlin, Germany, in 1948 in Oskaloosa. She died Nov. 10, 1955. He married Donna Hootman of Douds, Oct. 5, 1956, in Ottumwa.

Mr. Copeland attended school in Ottumwa and served in the United States Army during World War II, including the occupation of Berlin. He was employed at John Morrell and Company in Ottumwa for 28 years. He and his second wife operated the Douds Locker from 1973-1976 when he was forced to retire because of ill health.

Mr. Copeland was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, the Douds Community Club and had been a member of the former Van Buren Lodge No. 350, IOOF in Selma.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, James Copeland of Mandeville, La., Jerry Copeland and wife Karen of Loveland, Colo., John Copeland and wife Donna of Dove Creek, Colo., and Nicholas Copeland and wife Donna of Keosauqua; two daughters, Liliane Obrecht of Eaton, Colo., and Connie Waugh and husband William of Libertyville; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Copeland of Fairfield and Fred Copeland of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two sisters, Judy Northup of Newton; and Bonita Clay of Atkins, Ark.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Larry Copeland; and two sisters, Pauline Pettit and Marilyn Williams.
