DEATH OF F. T. HUMPHREYS.

Our community was shocked one day last week by the news that Frederick T. HUMPHREYS was dead. The first news was premature. He did not die until Friday, January 17th, 1889, at 8:45 p.m. (sic - Friday was Jan. 18th). Mr. HUMPHREYS had been confined to bed but a short time with an old affection of the lungs and heart. Thursday night he was assisted from bed, but as soon as he was on his feet he fell to the floor and remained in a comatose condition until death. Mr. HUMPHREYS was one of our best known and most highly esteemed citizens. For many years he had been the principal auctioneer of the county and his services were in demand all over this section. He was born in Jefferson county, Indiana, August 9, 1818, and came to Jefferson county in 1841. He owned 200 or more acres of land in Cedar township and was a prosperous farmer. In 1848 he married Louisa GOSSAGE (sic - GORSUCH) who died December 21, 1871. The issue of this marriage was 8 children - 6 girls and 2 boys. In 1873 he was married to Sarah DAWES, by whom he had one child -- a boy. He was a man of ardent temperament and strong friendships. He was a consistent member of the Christian church. He was one of the early settlers of the county and delighted to talk of the incidents connected with its early days. He was strictly honest and honorable in all his dealings with his fellow men. He had no enemies and his death is sincerely mourned by all who knew him. In its bereavement the family will have the sympathy of many friends. The remains were interred Sunday in the Wright cemetery, about two miles east of his late residence.
