He grew to manhood there and was married to Sarah WILSON, January 6th, 1848 The family came to this county in 1850, and in 1851 settled on a farm near Reed's mill, remaining there until 1884. Eleven children were born to them, seven of whom are now living--George W. and Mrs. Laura WIREMAN in Liberty township, Seneca at Ottumwa, Oscar at Larned, Kan., Sylvanus, Alvah and Mrs. Chloe MILLER in this county. All of them were present at the funeral. Mr. CORNELL was a man of excellent habits and character, and in earlier years had many acquaintances throughout the county where he had lived so long. Note:
Some sources use "George Washington" for the first two names; the inscription and obituary use only "Washington Cornell" for his name.Born on January 17, 1826 and died Dec. 19, 1903. A Jefferson county death record reportedly used "Feb. 26, 1903" for the DOD.

Page 5, Column 3Washington CORNELL was born in Warren County, Ohio, January 17th, 1827 (sic - 1826), and died in this city December 19th, 1893 after an illness of two weeks. He grew to manhood in Ohio and was married there in 1848 to Sarah WILSON. In 1849 they came to Iowa and settled on a farm between this city and Libertyville and made that their home until 1884 when they moved to Fairfield. They were the parents of eleven children, seven survive them. The mother died in January 1903. Since her death he has visited and made his home with his children until a short time ago he wanted to return to his old home where he died. We became acquainted with him in 1897 and found him a very pleasant old man, a conscientious citizen for the right. Funeral services were held Monday, December 21st, and his remains were laid to rest by the side of his companion.
