Mr. BRIER was born September 21, 1846 in Columbus, Ohio. At the age of 18 on September 12, 1864, inspired by the cause of the Union he enlisted at Greensburg, Ind. Earlier he had made an endeavor to enlist at Columbus, Ohio and was rejected because he was slightly underweight.

After laboring on the farm for six months in Indiana he again applied for admission into the army and was accepted. He responded to the last call which was made for soldiers and saw active service for about a year. He served in Company K, 142nd Indiana infantry. He saw service in only one battle, serving under General Thomas, who won a victory from the Confederate army under General Hood, at Nashville, Tenn. He was fortunate in not being wounded and went through his year of service enjoying good health.

Mr. BRIER was discharged from the service June 28, 1865 at which time he returned to his home in Ohio. In 1867 he moved to Brighton where he engaged in farming. He was married to Caroline KNERR on March 3 1869. He has lived in the same house in Fairfield for 55 years.
