Daniel Kenneth MASTERSON

Daniel Kenneth MASTERSON of Fairfield passed away at 2 pm on Monday afternoon at the University Hospital in Iowa City, of complications from cancer treatment. He leaves behind his wife Lisa and son Evan in Fairfield. A Memorial gathering will be held between 6 and 8 pm, Thursday March 8 at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield. Call Jim.

Born in CA on Feb. 21st, 1957, Dan was the seventh in a family of eight children belonging to Lois and Robert MASTERSON. His father made a living as a contract pilot, and Dan's first excursion outside of the U.S. was to Mexico when he was two. When he was eight the family moved to the Philippine Islands, where Dan attended a local school, and at age twelve he lived in Spain, and then Africa. While in Africa Dan and two of his brothers traveled alone from the northern Congo to Lagos Nigeria by road, and from there north across the Sahara Desert to Algiers - a journey of over four thousand miles. He was 15 years old at the time.

His later life led him through many different places and jobs, including sailing in the Caribbean, crab and shrimp fishing in Alaska, and work in the oilfields of the continental U.S, Alaska, Africa and the Gulf of Mexico.

Dan moved to Fairfield in 1993, where he worked in construction and for a period as an employee at Falco. He met his future wife Lisa DeMITCHELL in 1995 and they produced a son Evan, in 2001. Dan returned to petroleum work as a directional driller in 2005, traveling to and from home in Fairfield for the last six years of his life.

Dan will be missed by those of us who knew and loved him as a kind, warm-hearted and caring man, father, and a fun-loving character quick to point out the quirkier side of life, and who could always be counted on to bring a smile to our faces.

He is also survived by his mother, brothers and sister in California, Hawaii and France. He is preceded in death by his father 'Bat', and his brother and companion Africa and Caribbean adventurer, Tony. One happiness in this is that this mischevious trio will be taunting us with their goodness, love and humor in our living for many years to come. And that they'll be waiting for us down the road.

So long Dan.

Any donations to the family would be warmly welcomed and can be mailed to Lisa De MITCHELL, 106 S. Maple, Fairfield, IA 52556.
