Conrad Kern, one of the substantial old German farmers of Walnut township, was found dead in the timber on his farm about five miles southeast of Brighton Monday evening. He had gone out that afternoon to do some chopping.....he was struck on the head by a limb.....Born in Germany in 1831; came to this country when 21 years of age, lived in Pennsylvania two years then came to Iowa. He has lived on the same farm for over 30 years. On Jan. 6 (year?) married Katie Mickel who with two sons and two daughters survives. Family all lives at home except Anna Madden in Kansas. She arrived Wednesday night too late for the funeral. Rev. Heppe officiated. Deceased had been a member of the German M.
