George BURGER was born in Zutzendorf, Alsace, Germany, Dec. 16, 1850, and died at his home near Merrimac, July 14th 1916 aged 65 years, six months and 14 days. He was the youngest son of a family of seven children. Two of his brothers and two sisters are still living in the old country. His eldest sister died there in 1914, and his brother John died in California many years ago.
He received his education mostly in the German schools, was confirmed when 14 years of age, and then worked at the shoe worker trade until 16 years of age when he came to Jefferson County, Iowa. Here he spent the remainder of his life with the exception of eight years in the California mines and two years in Burlington.
April 16 1884 he was married to Miss Maggie SINN who with their five children survives him. They are as follows: Mrs. Katie DIERS of Four Corners, Mrs. Anna CRILE, and John near Merrimac, and Jake and Ila at home. There are also six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday morning at the Germanville Lutheran Church with interment in Union Cemetery.
