MONSON, Peter 1810 - 1892

MONSON, ANDERSON, BRASQUIST

Note: this is primarily a transcription of the obituary for Peter MONSON. The funeral service, it turns out, was held for two people at the same time - Peter MONSON and a "Mr. BRASQUIST". Peter is known to be buried in the New Sweden Lutheran cemetery near Lockridge, Iowa. There are no burial listings for this "Mr. BRASQUIST", so while it may be that he was also buried in this cemetery, no headstone is known for him to confirm it. His final resting place is, as a result, a mystery.

"Deaths of Two Old Residents Near Salina

Mr. Peter MONSON died at his home in Salina, on Thursday evening, January 14, at 9 P.M., after three weeks of severe suffering. He was 81 years old. Mr. MONSON came to Iowa from Sweden in 1851. He settled on a farm north-east of Salina, where he raised a family who have all grown to manhood and womanhood. Some years ago he moved to Salina, where his aged wife and a daughter died. Since that time he has lived with friends, at the time of his death living with John P. ANDERSON. The funeral was on Saturday, the 16th, at 2 P.M., at the Swedish Lutheran church, of which Mr. MONSON was a zealous member. The body was laid to rest by the side of his wife.

On the same day and at the same hour Mr. BRASQUIST, who lived three miles north-east of Salina, was buried, he being a member of the same church. Mr. BRASQUIST was some sixty years old. His wife died a few years ago. He leaves four children, two girls and two boys.

The two funerals were preached at the same hour, by the Swedish Lutheran minister, the two coffins being in front of the pulpit."

* Transcribed for genealogy purposes. I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Peter MONSON was born November 9, 1810 in Sweden, died January 14, 1892, at Salina, in Jefferson county, Iowa. Peter and members of his family are buried in the New Sweden Lutheran cemetery just west of Lockridge.

Other than the mention of "Mr. BRASQUIST" being about sixty years of age and the possiblity that he was buried in the same cemetery, nothing else is currently known about his life and family. Any clarification would be appreciated.
