Clem O. TOPPING

Clem O. TOPPING, 94, a resident of Parkview Care Center for three years, died at 2:10 a.m. today, Nov. 13, 1991, at Jefferson County Hospital.

The service is set tentatively for 11 a.m. Saturday at Burch-Raymond Funeral Home in Birmingham. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery at Birmingham. Visitation is open at the funeral home. the family will receive friends at the home of Dorothy BELL, 204 Iowa Ave. Memorials have been established to Stockport Public Library and the Parkview Care Center Activity Fund.

TOPPING was born March 21, 1897, at Winchester in Van Buren County, the son of Samuel F. and Rosena SHEROD TOPPING. He grew up in Winchester and the Birmingham community and graduated from Birmingham High School in 1915. He farmed northwest of Stockport for more than 60 years. In 1949, he received the Bankers Conservation Award for Van Buren Master Farmer. He was one of the first in Van Buren County to use contour farming. He married Emma E. NELSON on Aug. 12, 1924, at Chariton. She died April 22, 1988. He was a member of Birmingham Presbyterian Church, Stockport Lions Club, Van Buren County Historical Society and a charter member of Haney-Brannan American Legion Post 181 of Birmingham. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy BELL of Fairfield, Charlotte OLSEN of Babylon, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, John of Fairfield and a sister, Gertrude DILLE of Birmingham. Three sisters, Marie, Bessie and Mildred TOPPING, preceded him in death.
