Louis 'Louie' SHELANGOUSKI

Louis "Louie" SHELANGOUSKI, 87, of Rapids City, Ill., died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at Trinity Pathway Hospice in Bettendorf.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Rapids City. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery in Rapids City, with graveside military rites conducted by the American Legion Coe-Lamb Post 421.

Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. today at Gibson Funeral Home in Port Byron, Ill., where a rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities or Alleman High School.

Mr. SHELANGOUSKI was born Aug. 22, 1924, in Polishville, the son of Carrie PECH and Edward SHELANGOUSKI. He married Theresa MOHR Sept. 17, 1949, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Rapids City.

Mr. SHELANGOUSKI spent his early years helping out on his grandparents' farm. His first paid job was as a paper carrier. His family relocated to East Moline, Ill., and Mr. SHELANGOUSKI was still in high school when called by his country to serve in World War II. He was deferred until after graduation from United Township High School in 1943, when he entered the United States Navy. He served as an electrician mate in various locations in the South Pacific until the end of the war in 1946.

Upon returning to the states, Mr. SHELANGOUSKI received additional training as a civilian electrician. After helping out as a laborer, he selected carpentry as his profession and helped construct buildings all over the Quad Cities. He purchased land from the parish priest and built the family home on weekends and after work. The SHELANGOUSKIs moved into the house he built in 1960 and still reside there today.

Mr. SHELANGOUSKI was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters COF Court 2050, serving as youth director and honored as Fraternalist of the Year and a member of the Hall of Fame. He also was a member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters of America Local No. 166 for 42 years, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8890, Amvets Post 0145, American Legion Post 421, D.A.V. Chapter IL 103, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He also was an Honor Flight participant, and a Democratic Precinct Committee member.

He enjoyed working with his hands, growing vegetables and flowers, drawing, dancing, singing, traveling, reading the newspaper, and attending Mass.

Survivors include his wife; eight children, Beverly ARNOLD and husband Dean of Winnebago, Ill., Marcia DRISCOLL and husband Chuck of the San Francisco Bay area, Debbie WINSTON and husband Dick of St. Louis, Anita BROWN and husband Jim of Sacramento, Calif., Mary Beth SHELANGOUSKI of St. Louis, David SHELANGOUSKI and wife Janice of East Moline, Diane SHARP and husband Brian of Rock Island, Ill., and Carol SHELANGOUSKI of St. Charles, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Caroline ANDERSON of East Moline.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Norbert, Gerald and Roy.
