Baby HUNGER Dies

The remains of Mrs. Gerthart HUNGER (sic. Jessie Elizabeth GREEN HUNGER, Mrs. Gebhard H. HUNGER) who died in her home in Burlington Saturday morning (sic. September 23, 1905) at ten o'clock was brought here today on Burlington No. 3. Shortly after the train left Burlington the little babe, for whom Mrs. HUNGER had given up her life, expired. A telegram was dispatched to the relatives and reached them at one of the stations near this city. A realative immediately returned to that city to prepare the little body for burial and bring it to this city. The funeral of the mother was held at ten o'clock this morning as announced, from the Methodist church after which the body was taken back to the residence of George WRAY to await the arrival of the infant son. The remains arrived at 12:40 o'clock this noon and the bodies of the mother and her child were interred in the same coffin in Evergreen cemetery at 1:30 o'clock. Hosts of friends here will extend heartfelt sympathies to the grief stricken husband and father and other relatives in this great sorrow.

Obituary

Jessie Elizabeth, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Green, was born near Perlee Iowa October 27, 1875. She passed peacefully to rest Saturday September 23 at 10 a.m. The family consisted of four children, two sons and two daughters, one son and one daughter being now dead. The family moved to Fairfield in 1882, Jessie being then seven years old. When she was thirteen years old her mother died. She attended the public schools of Fairfield until she reached the high school when she took a business course. June 27, 1901 she was married to Mr. G.H. HUNGER of Burlington Iowa. After four years of happy married life when friends were congratulating her upon the birth of her first born child she suddendly (sic.) sickened and died. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Fairfield Iowa June 17, 1894, remaining a loyal member until her death, at which time she was a member of First church Burlington Iowa.

Fifteen minutes after the train bearing her body left Burlington enroute to Farifield for burial, the little one died. The little body was brought on the next train and the mother with her first born asleep upon her breast was laid to rest. "In death they were not divided." Friends who watched with her in the last hours of her life, little dreamed of death being near and confidently expected her to recover and live the happy mother life of devotion to her child. They knew --

"There is a reaper whose name is Death,
And with his sickle keen
He reaps the bearded grain at a breath
And the flowers that grow between:"

But they never suspected the grim old reaper stood so near. They might well have said --

"Our hopes belied our fears,
Our fears our hopes belied
We thought her dying when she slept
And sleeping when she died."

The funeral services were held at the First M.E. church Monday at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. Thomas Osborn, assisted by Rev. W. Luther Bright. The interment did not take place until the afternoon when the body of the child having arrived, mother and child were buried together.
