John Edward HAMMES, age 60 of Richland, passed away January 5, 2012 as the result of a farming accident at his home.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2012 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield with Father Charles Fladung officiating.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, with family present from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church. Prayers for a Christian Wake will be held at 6 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Richland First Responders. Cards and memorials can be sent to 33640 315th Ave. Richland, Iowa 52585.
John was born October 16, 1951 in Fairfield, to Edward and Arlene DUTTON HAMMES. He married Rosemary WARD HAMMES on November 13, 1971.
He had served with the Iowa National Guard and was a farmer all of his life. He was affiliated with the Eagles, VFW, Elks and the Parish Council.
John is survived by his mother: Arlene PEIFFER, wife: Rosemary HAMMES, 3 children: Jennifer (Jeremy) HAMMES REED of Farmington, Minnesota, A.J. (Mandy) HAMMES of Packwood and Renee (Phil) HAMMES GRIMM of Norwalk, 6 grandchildren: Makayla HAMMES, Zachary HAMMES, Tanner REED, Lauren REED, Abbigail HAMMES and Easton John GRIMM and 3 siblings: Jean Anne (Jay) SEMSCH of Durant, Catherine (Tony) GREINER of Keota and Pat (Tracy) HAMMES of Batavia.
He was preceded in death by his father: Edward HAMMES, step-father: Edwin PEIFFER and 1 grandchild: Asher GRIMM.

Officials are not releasing the victim's name until family members have been notified.RICHLAND -- The identity of an individual killed in a farming accident this morning is not being released until all the family has been notified.
The Richland Fire Department and Richland First Responders responded to the accident just outside of Richland around 7 a.m.
An individual became trapped in the grain while emptying a grain bin.
The Sigourney Fire Department and Keokuk County Ambulance Service also responded to the call.

Front PageHAMMES named as victim of farming accident
RICHLAND -- The identity of a man killed in a farming accident early Thursday has been confirmed as 60-year-old John Edward HAMMES of Richland.
According to a representative of the Richland Fire Department, HAMMES was attempting to unload a grain bin on his farm just south of Richland when he was caught in the vacuum and pulled downward into the soybeans.
Attempts by emergency personnel to revive him were unsuccessful, and HAMMES was pronounced dead at the scene.
A service for HAMMES is planned at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Sunday at the church, with his family present from 4-8 p.m.
