Robert Anthony FRITZ, 93, of rural Brighton, died early Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at home.
A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church in East Pleasant Plain, with the Rev. Charles J. Fladung and the Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery near the church.
Open visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the family present 5-7 p.m. and Prayers for a Christian Wake at 7 p.m.
Memorials to Hospice of Washington County, Saints Joseph and Cabrini Church or Mass stipends may be left at the church or may be mailed to the family at 1151 Smoketree Lane, Brighton 52540.
Arrangements are in the care of Gould Funeral Home of Brighton.
Mr. FRITZ was born March 30, 1918, at home, in rural Brighton, the son of Michael Edward and Gertrude Elizabeth ARNDT FRITZ. He married Winifred MOELLER Aug. 16, 1950, in Houghton.
Mr. FRITZ attended Burr Oak Country School through eighth grade. He farmed in rural Brighton his entire life. He also was a bricklayer and dug graves by hand in 36 cemeteries.
Mr. FRITZ was a member of Saints Joseph and Cabrini Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree of Father Grothie Assembly; he held the office of faithful navigator twice.
Mr. FRITZ enjoyed spending time with family, reading, listening to old time country and polka music, watching and attending baseball games, playing cards and horseshoes and collecting rocks and toy tractors.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters: Jane SYMMONDS and husband Virgil and Mary STECKER, all of Fairfield, Lucy DIETZMAN and husband Matt of Keosauqua and Rita BERRY and husband Tim of Bates City, Mo.; four sons: Joe and wife Lori and Tony, all of Brighton, Greg and wife Deb of Fairfield and Charles and wife Debi of Sigourney; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister: Marian REDLINGER of Solon; and two brothers: Sylvester of Brighton and Cletus of Fort Wayne, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son: Jerome; one son-in-law: Marty STECKER; two sisters: Alice REDLINGER and Loretta SCHNEIDER; and three brothers: John, Walter and infant Richard.
