Carolyn L. (GIRE) KAUFFMAN (Age 81) passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2011. Beloved wife of Col. Thomas M. KAUFFMAN (USMC, Ret),devoted mother of former Fairfax County (Virginia) Supervisor Dana KAUFFMAN and loving grandmother of Ethan KAUFFMAN. The KAUFFMAN's (sic) celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on September 1, 2011.
Carolyn grew up loving horses. She graduated Fairfield High School with the Class of 1948. She became an accomplished artist and unpublished author while traveling with her family across America and Europe before settling in Fairfax City, Virginia. She was an active supporter of many Virginia Democratic officials and gave generously to groups supporting the homeless, Native Americans, veterans, and countless animal rights organizations. While in California in the 1960s, Carolyn challenged a major agricultural company and succeeded in making them stop using an herbicide that was killing area wildlife.
Ms. KAUFFMAN earned a law degree by correspondence and was a civil servant supporting Camp Lejeune's Criminal Investigation Bureau in the 1950s. She was preceded in death by her sister Elaine (GIRE) BOYSEL of Fairfield, Iowa and her father, Ed GIRE and mother, Edith (ANDERSON) GIRE of Fairfield and Libertyville.
A memorial service and reception will be held at Fairfax United Methodist Church, 10300 Stratford Avenue, Fairfax, VA 22030 on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 10 AM. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at 2 PM. Please assemble at the Administration Building by 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Lamb Center, 3220 Old Lee Hwy, Fairfax, VA 22030, to the Fairfax UMC Church's welfare funds or to the charity of your choice.
