Friday, 6 January 1967Last Spanish-American War Veteran Dies
Joseph R. PETERS, 92, Jefferson County's last surviving veteran of the Spanish-American War, died Thursday at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. He had been a patient there for 20 days.
PETERS, 306 S, Court St., had made his home in Jefferson County for 58 years. A retired letter carrier, teacher and justice of the peace, he also lived for many years in Aurora, Neb.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Western Behner Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. Ned Gillum. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery. Military rites will be held at the grave.
Peters was born Sept. 12, 1874 in Jefferson County the son of James R. and Mary S. BLACK PETERS. He was married to Hattie E. WILSON Oct. 25, 1905.
Surviving are his widow and the following children: Floyd PETERS, Rocky Mountain, N.C.; Ralph PETERS, Bruce, Wis.; Mrs. Nels HOLM, Rockford Ill.; Gale PETERS, Baldwin, N.Y.; Kenneth PETERS, Richmond, Wa.; John PETERS, Fort Madison; Lyle PETERS, Knoxville, Tenn.; Mrs. Mary WILLIAMS, Virgil PETERS and Mrs. Lester HEADLEY, all of Fairfield.
Also surviving are 23 Grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bertha POWELSON, and one brother, F. Ben PETERS, both of Fairfield. Two sisters, five brothers and one grandchild are deceased.
