C. O. CARTER Taken In Death

C. O. CARTER, 84, died at 11:20 a.m. today at his home at 207 E. Kirkwood Ave.

The body is at the Weston Behner Funeral home where arrangements are pending.

CARTER was a 59-year member of the local Odd Fellow lodge and a former state IOOF officer. He retired from the post office in 1942.

Saturday Rites For C. O. CARTER

Services for Charles O. CARTER, 84, retired Fairfield rural mail carrier, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral home.

CARTER died Wednesday at his home at 207 E. Kirkwood after a serious illness of three weeks. Services will be conducted by the Rev. J. Roland Crandall with burial in Evergreen cemetery.

CARTER was born April 25, 1879 in Jefferson county, the son of William D. and Rachel OSBORN CARTER. He married Gertie E. GRAHAM Oct. 25, 1906. He served as a rural carrier for 26 years. He also was a member of Company M, Iowa National Guard.

CARTER was a 59-year member of the Odd Fellows, serving as patriarch in 1951-1952. He was recording secretary of Jefferson Lodge No. 4 for 27 years. He was also affiliated with Iowa Encampment No. 6, Canton Biglow No. 6 of Ottumwa and Rebekah Lodge No. 96. He was a member of the First Methodist church and the Modern Woodmen of America.

Surviving are his wife and the following children: Mrs. Hope ELAND, Winfield; Leland CARTER, Littleton, Colo.; Mrs. Woodrow CLARKE, Council Bluffs; Mrs. William HALL and Mrs. Jack SELLARS, both of Fairfield.

Eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters also survive, Mrs. William RUSSELL, Peoria, Ill.; Earl, Fairfield; Harry, Burlington; Mrs. Ralph STOUT, Birmingham; and Clifford, St. Petersburg, Fla. One son, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.
