John Don BROWN, 87, of Ottumwa, died November 8, 2011 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
Don BROWN was born on March 27, 1924 in Ottumwa, the son of Elroy and Maude Opal BROWN.
He grew up in Ottumwa and graduated from Ottumwa High School. He joined the Navy during WWII. On February 20 1946, he was united in marriage with Dorothy Bernice OSTEEN of Ottumwa in Oskaloosa. Soon after their marriage they moved to Fairfield where Don attended Parson (sic - Parsons) College. He graduated from Parsons and became an Industrial Arts teacher at Fairfield High School. He also coached football and basketball at Fairfield High School. Later he worked for the Iowa Highway Commission as a draftsman. From there he became the Director of Transportation for the Fairfield Community School District. While in that position he attended graduate school at the University of Iowa and graduated with a Master's Degree in Elementary Administration. He then became the Principal for Lincoln and Pleasant Plain elementary schools and retired as the Elementary Principal of Lincoln and Lockridge elementary schools.
He retired in 1988 and enjoyed RV travel, grandkids and tinerking. He and Dorothy moved back to Ottumwa in 1999.
He was a member of Willard St. United Methodist Church.
Don loved his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, Hawkeyes, hunting, fishing and the St. Louis Cardinals. He and Dorothy also enjoyed watching Ottumwa sports teams and relatives playing on various local teams.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Jerry (Jane) of Urbandale and Bruce (Beth) of Thousand Oaks, CA; two grandchildren, Ben (Jill) of Sacramento, CA and Elizabeth (Mike) of Plano, TX; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Teagan of California, Neriah and Rinnah of Texas, with another to be born in December.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Luers officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a fund for books for the Fairfield Community Schools elementary schools.
