Mary N. SMITH

DOUDS --- Mary N. SMITH, 96, formerly of Douds, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 1997, at Lantern Nursing Home in Coralville.

The funeral service was at 11 a.m. today, Monday, Jan. 20, at Peoples Church north of Batavia with the Rev. Jack L. Jackson officiating. Burial was at Smith Cemetery near the church. Memorials can be made to Smith Cemetery and can be left at Pedrick Funeral Home, which was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. SMITH was born May 14, 1900, north of Martinsburg, the daughter of Jacob O. and Cora Belle BENNISON MILLER. She married Raphael E. SMITH Jan. 17, 1918. He died March 23, 1982. She grew up in the Martinsburg area and farmed with her husband in Wapello, Jefferson and Van Buren counties. They also lived in Marshalltown, retiring to Douds in 1970, where she lived until going to live with her children in North Liberty, Springfield, Mo., and Douds. She had resided the last four years at Lantern Park. She was a member of Douds Bible Baptist Church and Peoples Church of Batavia.

Survivors include three sons, Donald and Keith E., both of Douds, and Gerald of Batavia; five daughters, Lulu Bell COLLETT and Virginia FAULKNER, both of Hedrick, Alice LEE of North Liberty, Dorothy BATES of Fort Madison, and Anna Marie MILLER of Springfield; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by two sons, Floyd and Dale; three brothers, Harley, Charles and Ralph MILLER; and three sisters, Mary DAY, Alice MITCHELL and Pearl DACEY.
