Max Dewey SMITH

Max Dewey SMITH was found dead at his home at 113 S. Adams Street Thursday afternoon.

Coroner Gordon Traul said he had died of natural causes while in bed. He lived alone and had apparently died early Wednesday morning.

He was born February 17, 1898 near Batavia and had been a resident of Ottumwa for 27 years. He was a veteran of WWI having served with the Marine Corps in France. For 25 years he worked at John Morrell & Co.

Surviving is one son, Robert E. SMITH of Ottumwa and a daughter, Mary Louise COKE of Susanville, California; a brother, Voke SMITH of Burlington; a sister, Ava GRIFFIN of Denver. His parents and a brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 at the Traul Funeral Home. The Rev. Clarence W. Hanscom of the First Congregational Church will officiate. Military services at Smith Cemetery near Batavia will be held in charge of the Ottumwa American Legion Post. Pall Bearers will be John Carter, John North, Dennis Keller, Jack Florino, Joseph Miller and J. W. Ellis. The casket will be closed at the beginning of the service.
