LeRoy H. FOSTER, 60, Fairfield businessman, died at 5:35 a.m. today at the Jefferson County Hospital where he had been a patient for the past week. He had been in failing health the past three months suffering from cancer.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Raymond Funeral Home. The Rev. Clair Odell will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
LeRoy H. FOSTER was born Jan. 30, 1925, at Detroit Lakes, Minn. He was the son of Fred and Lena GUETLING FOSTER.
A resident of Fairfield since 1948, he served as a dealer for Allis-Chalmers farm machinery, he was an auctioneer and in more recent years operated the Foster Furniture business located north on Highway 1.
FOSTER was an avid Model T and Model A Ford antique car collector.
He was married June 15, 1947, to Jenna E. LEATHERS, who survives.
FOSTER was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion, IOOF, Antique Car Club, Iowa Auctioneer Association and the National Auctioneer Association.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in both the European and Pacific Theaters of war.
He took part in D Day operations and witnessed the raising of the American Flag on Iow (sic - Iwo) Jima Island.
FOSTER is survived by two sons, Gary, Clinton; and David, Des Moines; and one grandson. Also two brothers, Donald FOSTER, Minneapolis, Minn., and Byron LINDBERG, Dent, Minn.; and a sister, Elaine MEVISSEN, Minneapolis.
The family home is at 601 N. Second in Fairfield.

I have been overwhelmed! Thank you all for the many thoughtful deeds done for us while LeRoy was ill and at the time of his death. A special thank you for the memorials, cards, flowers and food brought to the house and for calls, visits, offers of help and other gestures of love. My thanks to-- the second floor and swing bed nurses for care and understanding; to Dr. Hill for excellence in medicine; to the United Methodist Church ladies for the luncheon following the funeral; to Soroptimists for a coffee served at the house; to the Lions Club for visits, memorials and attendance; to Pastor Odell for visits and expertise in conducting a fitting memorial service; to the Odd Fellows Lodge members for their involvement; to the American Legion for the United States flag and their part in the service; and to Bernita Pettit for her love and compassion. May you all receive a blessing and walk with your head held high for having known LeRoy.
