DEATH OF MAT. CROY. -- Matthias CROY was born in Zanesville, Ohio, March 4, 1820; was married in St. Clairsville, Ohio, in 1846, and moved to this county in the fall of the same year. He settled on the Wm. Downing place, four miles east of Fairfield. A year later he removed to Henry county, where he remained four or five years, then moved to Salina, remaming (sic - remaining) there some six years. He enlisted in Company M, Fourth Iowa Cavalry, in 1861, and served three years. He come (sic - came) to Fairfield in 1868. His first wife died Feb. 28, 1871. January 24, 1874, he was married to Mrs. Zelina KYLE, who survives him. He has one son, F. M. CROY, of Kanopolis, Kansas, and a daughter, Mrs. Iowa C. COX, of Martinsburg, Iowa.

Ever since his army experience he has been subject to digestive disorders, often serious. About two weeks ago this disease prostrated him, and grew steadily worse until two o'clock Monday afternoon, Sept. 12, when it ended in death. The funeral occurred from the residence at 3:30 P.M., Tuesday, under the auspices of the G.A.R., Rev. Dr. Magill conducting the religious services.

Mat. CROY, as he was familiarly known, was a plain man with a warm heart and a correct conscience. He will be sadly missed by many friends.

Note: Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield, with both of his wives, in Lot Old.P.386. His first wife was Sarah (maiden name unknown), and his second wife was Zelina NEWELL RISTINE SMITH KYLE (Matthias was her fourth marriage). Matthias' birth year has been found to vary; in his obituaries it's 1820, an Evergreen Cemetery transcription done in the early 1990s notes it as 1822, but back-figuring using his death date and age it works out to 1823. Consider a DOB with caution. The G.A.R. is the Grand Army of the Republic, the fore-runner of the American Legion.
