James W. TURNER, 94, of Fairfield, IA, died on October 21, 2011, at Jefferson County Health Center in Fairfield from injuries received in a farming accident on September 8.
Jim was born January 31, 1917, in Fairfield, the son of William M. and Alta M. TURNER. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1935 and attended Parsons College while working at Harper Brush Works. Jim married Phyllis A. TRAIL on March 26, 1938, in Lancaster, Missouri, and they settled in Fairfield. He lost his loving wife, Phyllis, on February 11, 1998, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
After 11 years with Harper Brush Works, Jim began working as a bookkeeper at the First National Bank in 1948. He retired from the bank as Vice President and Cashier in 1982. Jim loved the outdoors and never slowed down following his retirement. He enjoyed working at his farms, hunting and fishing. He also built and maintained numerous bluebird houses along the country roads near his farms. Attending his granddaughters' sporting events and school activities was one of his favorite pastimes. Jimmy loved people, always had time for a chat and a story, and was the ultimate caregiver to family and numerous friends. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Eagles Club, and Elks Club. Jim served on the Soil and Water Conservation Board, was the President of Evergreen Cemetery Association for many years, and was one of the founders of the Fairfield Little League.
Survivors include one sister, Evelyn NELSON of Fairfield; three children, David W. and wife Margaret RYAN of Albuquerque, NM; Mary K. and partner Elizabeth BRUTVAN of Roseville, CA; and Steven J. and wife Becky CARY of Fairfield; three grandchildren, Kristen of Orland Park, IL; Deanna of San Luis Obispo, CA; and, Stacie of Brentwood, MO. His extended family includes the relatives of the late Julius DIERS.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three brothers, Glenn, Paul and Harry TURNER.
A memorial service will be held at Behner Funeral Home on Thursday, October 27 at 10am with the Pastor Danny Cary officiating. Private graveside services will follow.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday, October 26 at Behner Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Fairfield Little League or Jefferson County Conservation Board. Cards and memorials can also be sent to 2754 189th Blvd., Fairfield, IA 52556.
