M. Bruce ABBEY, 75, of Boone died Monday, May 21, 2001, due to complications from cancer at the Boone County Hospital in Boone.
The body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Stark-Wellin Chapel in Boone, with Ronald Franklin officiating.
Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the fuenral chapel. The family will be present from 7-8 p.m. Thursday to greet friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the National World War II memorial project in Washington, D.C.
Mr. ABBEY was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Fairfield, the son of Earl and Fanchon WILSON ABBEY. He married Rose GARDENER Aug. 29, 1948, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Fairfield.
He was a 1943 graduate of Fairfield High School and graduated in 1949 from Parsons College, with a bachelor's degree in general business.
Following graduation, he was involved in retail credit with the insurance inspection office. In 1957, he joined the personnel office at Iowa State University in Ames, where he was employed for 31 years before retiring.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater. He was involved with the landing, assault and capture of Peleiiu (sic - Peleliu) Island, Palau, and participated against enemy forces in Okinawa. Twice he was wounded in action and for his valor he received two Purple Hearts.
He was a member of the VFW, past president of the local chapter of ham radio operators and a life member of the Marine Corp League. After his military service, he served as waterfront director at the Boy Scout Camp near Ottumwa.
Survivors incude his wife of Boone, one daughter Sharon ABBEY and Rick Glynn of Omaha, Neb.; one son, Robert ABBEY and wife Kim of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren; and one brother, Earl ABBEY Jr. of Mount Pleasant.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
