Ralph LEWIS, 93, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Pekin, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in Fremont Cemetery.

A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, with the Rev. Jeff McPheron officiating.

Ralph Leo LEWIS

Ralph Leo LEWIS, 93, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Pekin, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Jeff McPheron officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery South in Fremont.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel.

A memorial has been established to United Way.

Mr. LEWIS was born Aug. 11, 1918, in rural Albia, the son of Tracy Boice and Lena JONES LEWIS. He married Helen GROOTVELD April 26, 1942, in Ottumwa. She preceded him in death.

Mr. LEWIS attended Albia country schools until eighth grade. As his father's health declined, Mr. LEWIS began farming fulltime. He was a lifelong farmer, starting near Fremont. In 1948, he bought a farm near Pekin, where he continued farming until his retirement in 1981. He and his wife wintered in Mesa, Ariz., and later moved there for several years.

Mr. LEWIS was a 50-year member of the Fairfield Elks Lodge. He was also a member of Deerwood Golf and Country Club in New London.

In his earlier years, Mr. LEWIS enjoyed playing in a softball league, dancing and hunting.

Survivors include one daughter: Donna CISCO of Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother: Dwight LEWIS of New Haven, Ind.; and three sisters: Faye WATERS of Pekin, Ill., Fern GIBBS of East Dundee, Ill., and Mary Lou ECKER of Moline, Ill.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter: Marsha HESS; one son: LaVerne LEWIS; and one brother: Floyd LEWIS in infancy.
