MRS. MANATREY RITES FRIDAY

Last rites for Mrs. J. P. MANATREY, prominent Fairfield resident who had lived almost a full century, will be held at her home, 703 E. Burlington street, where she had lived for 68 years.

The services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday with Dr. Curtis R. Douglass in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Mrs. MANATREY, 96, passed away at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at her home where she had been bedfast for some time.

However, she had kept her good health well past her 90th birthday. When Mrs. MANATREY celebrated her 93rd birthday on October 26, 1945, she was reading the daily paper without the use of glasses and enjoyed a ride now and then in the family car.

Mrs. MANATREY, the former Cordelia FYE, was born October 26, 1852, on a farm near Ollie, Iowa, in Keokuk county. Her parents owned the land site of Ollie, and the town was named for her older sister.

She came to Fairfield as the bride of J. P. MANATREY in 1881 to live in the house in which she passed away 68 years later. All four of her daughters were born in the family home.

The nonagenarian had an enviable memory that recalled incidents that occurred back through her life to the log cabin in which she lived as a girl.

Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. M. W. JENCKS, Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. Walter HUGHES and Hazel MANATREY, both of Fairfield. Another daughter, Mrs. Lewis WHEELOCK, passed away August 16, 1944.

Also surviving are three grandchildren: Louise WHEELOCK, Fairfield, who is attending Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois; Mrs. J. H. ABRAHAMS, Topeka, Kansas; and Lewis WHEELOCK, senior student at Harvard university; and a great granddaughter, Julia ABRAHAMS, Topeka.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: Buried in Evergreen Cemetery with husband John Peter MANATREY Jr., in Lot Old.P.334.
