Melva Jane WORKMAN, 86, of Stockport died at 5:25 A.M. October 1, 2011 at Good Samaritan Society -- Van Buren Hospice, Keosauqua.
She was born July 5, 1925 in West Point to Albert V. and Bertha BURTON BURNS, graduated from Ft. Madison High School in 1942 and married Richard Dale WORKMAN in 1949. They moved from West Point to Stockport where she has lived since. She is the mother of Dean BURNS, Stockport, Dalene JOHNSON (Roger) of West Liberty and Rick WORKMAN of Ft. Worth, TX. There are also 4 grandchildren, Rodney BURNS (Jen), Deanne DOHERTY (Sean), Mindy CARLSON (Bryan) DaMel SMITH (Craig), and 10 great grandchildren which all live in the Midwest. Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, a sister, Ruth LOWERY, a brother, Kenneth BURNS and an infant granddaughter.
While growing up in the Ft. Madison -- West Point area she worked at American Form & Hoe Co., Ft. Madison and the Iowa Army Ordinance Plant, Middletown. After purchasing a second-hand store in 1959 she and Dale began a 40-year career in buying and selling antiques in Stockport. For many years they sold their wares at Midwest Old Threshers every Labor Day weekend. She was actively engaged in local genealogy societies and authored the Stockport News column for several local papers. Melva Jane was instrumental in starting the Avenue of Flags and the restoration of the Depot Museum in Stockport. Her hobbies included playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her family. She was a member of Stockport American Legion Auxiliary and Van Buren Genealogy Society.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday October 4, 2011 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua. Fr. Stephen Page officiating.
Burial will be in Spencer Cemetery, rural Stockport.
Visitation will open at 2 P.M. Monday at the funeral home with family present 5-7 P.M. Memorials to the Stockport Fire Dept. may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 26067 141st St., Stockport, IA 52651.
