James METCALF, 68, of Fairfield, died today, Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at home.

Arrangements are pending at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

James Walter METCALF

James Walter METCALF, 68, of Fairfield, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at home.

A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Behner Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Cary officiating. Cremation will follow, with burial of cremains at a later date in Glasgow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Noah's Ark Animal Shelter, Lockridge Little League or Fairfield Trojan Boosters Club. Memorials and cards may be sent to 1914 Highway 34 West, Fairfield 52556.

Mr. METCALF was born Feb. 6, 1943, in Glasgow, the son of Walter and Arlene STEELE LYON METCALF. He married Rebecca JENNINGS in May 1967, and they later divorced. He married Lisa METCALF Aug. 2, 1997, in Glasgow.

Mr. METCALF attended Grant School and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1962. His work history throughout the years included working on John Ziegler's farm, at Courtney's Garage and at American Chain and Cable. He worked as a maintenance man for Dexter Company and retired in 2009.

Mr. METCALF was a 45-year member of International Association of Machinists No. 1293. His hobbies and interests also included Fairfield Jaycees and MVSC Stock Car Club of West Liberty and Columbus Junction.

Mr. METCALF enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, watching NASCAR, camping and being with his pets.

Survivors include his wife; his mother of Birmingham; his stepmother: Evelyn METCALF-DUFFY of California; two sons: Richard METCALF and wife Aileen of Batavia and Zachary METCALF and wife Sonja of Bristow, Va.; three daughters: Roxanne ALTEMEIER and husband David of Iowa City, Jenny KLETT of Casselberry, Fla., and Amber CARRIER and husband Tony of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and four brothers: Allan METCALF of California, Dennis METCALF of Wyoming, Robert LYON of Fairfield and Dave LYON of Birmingham; and five sisters: Bette WILKERSON of California, Katy HICKS of California, Mary Ann LISK of Keokuk, Vickie GLOVER of Keosauqua and Louise STAMMERMAN of Waukee.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandmother, Lydia STEELE.
