A melancholy affair occurred in our neighborhood last Monday. A son of Mr. C. K. SIMES, aged about 16 years, left home soon after dinner, as his friends supposed to go to some of the neighbors; but as he did not returing during the night following, search was commenced Tuesday morning at about 5 o'clock, when his body was found suspended in a tree about one hundred yards from home. A coroner's inquest was held, and a verdict of premeditated suicide was rendered. Circumstances indicated that the deed had been committed early Monday afternoon, probably at about 1 o'clock. The rope used was a new one that the boy had taken from the house as he left, the absence of which was the first thing to occasion real alarm to the family. No good reason can be assigned for the suicide; the boy having given no intimation of his intentions or motives. He had received uniform good treatment, and it is thought his action was the result of temporary passion. The family have the sympathy of the whole neighborhood.

*Transcribed for genealogy purposes; I am not related to the person(s) mentioned.

Note: In the 1880 census of Des Moines Twp., Jefferson County, IA (taken in June that year), is the family of Chesley K. and Ellen SIMES, with two sons, John W., age 20, and Joseph M. age 14. The parents are buried in County Line Cemetery, and are the only two SIMES burials there. We have no record of the burial place of this lad in our cemetery transcriptions (which could mean he doesn't have a gravestone), although such information may be on his death record.
