Page 1, Column 2Mrs. Mary Jane PUMPHREY died Thurs. about 11:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clifford LONG in Trenton... age 86. Born in St. Aloans, Ohio Dec. 22 1825. Married Jan. 16 1851 in Alexander, Ohio. Soon afterward the young couple moved to Boyle Co., Ky., where for eight years Mr. PUMPHREY was engaged with his brother in the manufacture of fanning mills in that state and in Tennessee. In 1860 Mr. & Mrs. PUMPHREY came to Iowa, landing in Jefferson County May 4th, where they purchased a quarter section of land, the greater part of which is now comprised within the city limits of Fairfield. Four children, three of whom are now living -- Henry and Clay of this city, and Mrs. Clifford LONG of Trenton. Mr. PUMPHREY died Sept. 16 1883.... The PUMPHREY family has been strongly identified with the early growth and history of Fairfield....

The Will of Mary J. PUMPHREY, widow of Wm. F., filed 16 Apr 1912, directs her sons to erect tombstone in Evergreen to their father and herself; mentions "my daughter Ona Belle WALTERS."
