Vera Ferne Smothers, 83, of Burlington, died at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in Burlington.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Prughâs Chapel in Burlington, with the Rev. Gary Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove, Garden of Peace in Burlington.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, with the family receiving friends from 7-8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington.

Mrs. Smothers was born July 10, 1920, in Fairfield, the daughter of Russell Arch and Kitty Irene Teeter Gorman. She married Bruce E. Smothers Feb. 6, 1960, in Burlington. He died Dec. 19, 2001.

Mrs. Smothers was a crossing guard for Burlington schools for 20 years.

She was affiliated with First Presbyterian Church in Burlington.

Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Baldosier and husband Ron of Fairfield; one stepdaughter, Sheila Morath of Roseville, Ill.; one brother, Leonard Gorman of St. Charles, Mo.; one sister, Bernice Cronk of Burlington; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
