Merle Dale "Fizz" Warner, 86, of Washington, Iowa, died after a brief illness Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with the Rev. Don Hodson officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.

Visitation will begin at noon Friday, with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A Masonic Lodge service will be at 6:30 p.m Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital. Online condolences may be sent to Mr. Warner's family through the funeral home's Web site at www.jonesfh.com .

Mr. Warner was born April 16, 1917, in Washington, the son of Rene and Dessi Work Warner. He married Lucille Lance Dec. 24, 1940, in Washington. She died in 1999.

Mr. Warner was a life-long resident of Washington County. He graduated from Washington High School in 1936. He owned and operated a service station in the south end of Washington. He served in the Army-Air Force during World War II as an airplane mechanic. After his time in the service, he began farming and farmed northeast of Washington for the rest of his life.

Mr. Warner was active in 4-H as a member and leader for many years. He served on the Washington County Fair Board for many years and recently received the distinction of honorary board member. He became an active member of the Masonic Lodge No. 26 and Masonic bodies in 1956. He belonged to the Scottish Rite, the York Rite, KAABA Shrine, Washington County Shrine Club and Louisa County Shrine. He also was a member of the Hardees Evening Coffee Group, the Washington Saddle Club and was a volunteer in the horse department at Midwest Old Threshers in Mount Pleasant for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Norton of Bettendorf and Barbara Bartholomew and husband Steve of Washington; one son, Larry Warner and wife Sally of Libertyville; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and one brother.
