JOHN F. LOEHR, AGED VETERAN, IS SUMMONED

Died Late Yesterday Afternoon; Funeral Arrangements Incomplete

John Ferdinand LOEHR, Civil War veteran, passed away at the Jefferson county hospital yesterday afternoon at 4:45 o'clock following an illness of but a few days. He had been in failing health for several years but was able to get around. Funeral services pending word from relatives. Friends may call at the Murray Funeral home up until Wednesday evening.

Mr. LOEHR was born in Wayne county, Richmond, Ind., May 31, 1846 and in 1851, when he was but five years of age, he came to Iowa and since that time he has spent practically his entire life in Jefferson county.

In 1864, when he was seventeen years old, he enlisted in the army in Company I, 45th Iowa Volunteers. He served until the end of the war, his service lasting about four months. He was in no regular engagements but fought the Bushwhackers in Tennessee.

May 1868 he was married to Miss Eliza A. McCREERY, who preceded him in death eight years ago. He was also preceded in death by two sons. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. Lillian BUSWELL, Ray and Guy LOEHR, all of Los Angeles, Calif.; Lee LOEHR, Mrs. Ray BAKER and Mrs. Fred NEIBERT of Fairfield, and Mrs. Gertrude HUSTON of Enid, Okla. He also leaves eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

After his return from the War Mr. LOEHR worked for his father, J. L. LOEHR. He spent fifteen years working for C. C. Risk. He was elected County Treasurer and served in that capacity for six years. He owned and managed a grocery store in New Chicago for over two years. After that he was city weighmaster for eight years. Having quit that position over four years ago he has spent the intervening time in retirement.

Note: Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Lot 2nd.119. Wife Eliza died in 1923 and is buried there with him.
