Darlene MANN, 98, formerly of Brighton and Wayland, died at 1:50 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011, at Bickford Cottage of Urbandale.
A service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton, with the Rev. Kelly Slagel officiating. Burial will be in Brighton Hillcrest Cemetery.
Open visitation will be 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Family visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
General memorials may be left at the funeral home or may be mailed to the family at 711 N. Center Ave., Galva, IL 61434.
Mrs. MANN was born Feb. 7, 1913, on the family farm near Keota, the daughter of John E. and Elsie B. ROMINE POWELL. She married Homer MANN June 3, 1941, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died Aug. 14, 1995.
Mrs. MANN attended Country School No. 6 and graduated from Washington High School in 1929. She received a teaching degree by attending both Iowa Wesleyan College and University of Northern Iowa when it was known as Iowa State Teachers College. Her first teaching job was in the country school she attended as a child. She taught in two one-room country schools, as well as at schools in Denmark and Bloomfield. She and her husband lived on his family farm near Brighton until moving to Wayland in 1994.
Mrs. MANN was active in Brighton United Church, PEO, Jefferson County Farm Bureau, Brighton Study Club and Krony Krew. She served on the Hillcrest Cemetery board.
In Wayland, she volunteered at the history museum and participated in a Bible study group at Wayland Mennonite Church.
Mrs. MANN's hobbies included reading, playing games of all kinds and collecting elephants.
Survivors include two children: Roger MANN and wife Jean of Galva, Ill., and Barbara BOCK and husband Jim of Fairmont, Minn.; three granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandson.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Lela MILLER and Corinne HILL.
